Questions, answered.

Click any question to expand. These are the topics you'll master inside the course.

What is Linux? +
Linux is a free and open-source operating system based on Unix. Widely used on servers, desktops, and embedded systems — known for its stability, security, and flexibility. It powers most of the internet, Android, and every supercomputer in the world.
What are the main components of Linux? +
The Kernel (manages hardware), the Shell (CLI between you and kernel), the File System (organizes data), the User Interface (CLI or GUI), and System Libraries (essential utilities). Together they form a complete OS.
What is the Linux kernel? +
The kernel is the core of the OS. It manages CPU, memory, devices, and exposes system calls that applications use to interact with hardware. Responsible for process management, memory management, and device drivers.
What are Linux distributions? +
A distribution (distro) bundles the kernel, libraries, applications, and a package manager into a ready-to-install OS. Popular examples: Ubuntu, Fedora, CentOS, Debian, Arch Linux.
How do you install software on Linux? +
Via package managers: apt (Debian/Ubuntu), yum or dnf (Fedora/CentOS), pacman (Arch). You can also compile from source or use containers like Docker.
What is a Linux terminal? +
A command-line interface where you type commands to navigate, run programs, and manage processes. Advanced users prefer it for its efficiency and the power of chaining commands together with pipes.
What are Linux file permissions? +
Linux assigns three permission sets: owner, group, and others. Each can read (r), write (w), or execute (x) — often expressed as numeric mode like 755.
What is the root user? +
The superuser with unrestricted access to everything. Used for installing software, managing accounts, and modifying configs. Use with caution — root actions can break the system if you're not careful.
What is a shell script? +
A text file (usually .sh) containing a series of shell commands executed in sequence. Used to automate repetitive tasks — backups, deployments, file processing, system maintenance.
What is a cron job? +
A scheduled task that runs automatically at specified intervals, managed by the cron daemon and configured via crontab. Perfect for backups, cleanup scripts, and recurring jobs.
Hard link vs soft link — what's the difference? +
A hard link is a direct reference to the data block on disk — multiple hard links share the same inode. A soft link (symlink) is a pointer to another file or directory; if the original is deleted, the symlink breaks.
apt-get vs apt — which should I use? +
apt-get is the original tool. apt is the newer, more user-friendly wrapper that combines features from apt-get, apt-cache, and others. Both work — but apt is more concise for daily use.
